DOCTOR RADAR #1, is the first issue of a new series published by TITAN COMICS through their international imprint, STATIX PRESS. It was written by Noel Simsolo with art by Bezian. It was released last Wednesday, November 22, 2017.

Generally, I try to get my comic book reviews out at least the week of release. Sometimes, I get them out sooner, and other times (like this article) later. Last week was Thanksgiving break, and I was on vacation in Utah for the whole week. I was able to review a couple Alterna Comics titles, but I missed out on this one last week.

However, I am back, and fully ready to give my review.

DOCTOR RADAR, is a story that takes place in France circa 1920. It follows the case taken on by a french detective. It is comparable to a Sherlock Holmes type of story. The writing was a bit fast paced. If you aren’t very familiar with the French language then you might miss out on trying to remember all the names of the characters. I struggled quite a bit in keeping track of the names for characters, locations, and ever phrases used in the writing.

It had a very french vibe, and the art style matched up with it. It was very reminiscent to the art and culture of Paris. It was very appropriate for the setting on the time period and landscape. Yet, it was a bit difficult to make out who was who from time to time due to the scratchiness and dark shadows.

I couldn’t find any reference to previous tellings of Doctor Radar, and therefore I am left to assume that this was an original concept. Which if it is, then I must say that I am impressed.

The book begins with the murder of a scientist on a train. He is known for his work in theories on space travel. So are a few other scientists that are later revealed to be murdered. The gentleman detective picks up the scent that all of these seemingly unrelated murders have more in common than meets the eye.

He takes off on an adventure that comes across a mysterious figure known as Doctor Radar. Not much is known about Radar, except that it is believed that he is the one who orchestrated these murders. The reason why is not known at this current moment in time.

I give this comic seven out of ten capes. The art work is stunning, and the premise of the story has potential to be something of an instant classic. Yet due to possibly translation errors (or my small brain), I just had a hard time following the story. I feel like I understand the plot, but I couldn’t keep track of who was who, where was where, and what was what.

If you are excited about foreign comics, and the STATIX PRESS line, then I would suggest that you check this one out. It seemed that it was the flagship release of the week. You can purchase this comic from Comixology for $4.99.
